About Lake Broadwater Conservation Park

Lake Broadwater Conservation Park is located approximately 13 kilometers south of Dalby in Queensland, Australia. It protects one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in southern Queensland, covering around 3,000 hectares of water and surrounding grasslands. The park’s geography features shallow, sometimes ephemeral, waters surrounded by dry eucalyptus woodlands and open grasslands, creating a rich habitat for a variety of wildlife. Historically, Lake Broadwater has been a key resource for local Indigenous peoples and early settlers, providing water and food. Today, it serves as an important refuge for waterbirds and other native animals, especially during dry periods when water sources are scarce in the region. Visitors are drawn to the park for birdwatching, fishing, picnicking, and relaxing by the water's edge. The lake supports species such as brolgas, black swans, ibis, and a number of migratory birds. Anglers come for traditional freshwater fish species like yellowbelly (Golden Perch) and cod. The flat terrain and tranquil surroundings offer easy walking and cycles around the park. Visitor facilities include picnic areas and basic amenities, encouraging day trips and quiet nature appreciation. The park is managed to maintain its natural values while supporting responsible public access. Its combination of open water, wetlands, and dry woodlands makes it an important natural refuge in an agricultural landscape.
